“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” – Arthur Ashe, Former Pro Tennis Player
This quote describes the recent volunteer activity undertaken in Waltham as employees donated supplies, assembled and filled backpacks, loaded trucks, and delivered 255 fully-stocked backpacks to families in need with elementary school-aged children.
Waltham employees have been donating their time this year to Healthy Waltham, a local food pantry. The backpack drive began in July for our 1001 Hours of Impact. The team obtained a generous vendor donation of 250 backpacks and then requested employee contributions to fill them with crayons, markers, binders, notebooks, and much more.
“Working in an environment where you and your colleagues can join forces to help lighten the load for someone is really what being a team is all about,” said Gina Koutsis, Associate Director, Project Manager. “I am proud of the Waltham team and what they accomplished. As a parent myself, it brings me great joy knowing that we helped make a difference to families within our local community.”
Backpacks were assembled on August 9 and 16, complete with a volunteer lunch one week and an ice cream truck the following week to thank all those involved. Approximately 40 Waltham employees gathered on those dates to stuff the backpacks.
“I was impressed with the amazing generosity and enthusiasm of the Waltham team throughout this event,” said Amy Johnson, AVP of Business Solutions. “This was a great opportunity to connect with colleagues while working to support and give back to our community.”
In total, more than 90 volunteer hours were achieved in Waltham through this effort. Thanks to all who helped with this endeavor to help children in the community.
